LAKEVIEW — The third largest Walgreens in the city is finally opening at Clark Street and Diversey Parkway on Friday, more than two years after word initially got out about the location.
The two-story, 19,000 square-feet store at the former Borders, 2817 N. Clark St., will open at 8 a.m. Friday, replacing the smaller Walgreens across the street, said Phil Caruso, a company spokesman.
Walgreens at 2801 N. Broadway will close at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The new corner space will not be as big as the flagship stores at State and Randolph or at Wicker Park's Six Corners, but it will offer more amenities than typical stores as part of the company's new push for a "Well Experience," Caruso said.
It will sell frozen yogurt, sushi, sandwiches and salads prepared on site, he said. A walk-in beer cooler is included in a larger booze selection. An expanded "Look Boutique" cosmetics department will offer manicures and pedicures in addition to more beauty products, he said.
And the pharmacy section will feature a health clinic with nurse practitioners on-site, more vitamins and more accessible pharmacists, Caruso said.
"We're trying to play a bigger role as a community pharmacy," he said. "Make it easier to interact with the pharmacists, more communication."
Construction for the new store started more than a year ago. The new store will have an official grand opening early next year.
