HUMBOLDT PARK — Two men are due in court Thursday after being charged with stealing mail from a postal truck in Humboldt Park.

John Merritt, 29, and Kevin Jones, 34, are accused of swiping mail from the truck in the 2900 block of West Division Street at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Witnesses gave police descriptions of the suspects and their getaway car. Police later found the car in the 1600 block of North Kimball Avenue, police said.

Witnesses identified Jones and Merritt as the mail thieves, and police found stolen mail in a black duffel bag that was dropped on the street on the same block the duo was arrested, officials said.

Merritt, of the 1500 block of West Clarence Avenue in suburban Berwyn, was charged with a felony count of theft. Jones, of the 3800 block of West Ohio Street in Humboldt Park, was charged with felony theft as well as for an outstanding warrant.

The thefts come after a carrier was pushed to the ground during an attempted robbery last Friday near Rockwell and Iowa streets.

That incident was one of about a half-dozen assaults on Chicago carriers in the previous two months, officials said.
