CHICAGO — A 37-year-old man died after his car swerved and struck a pole on North Lake Shore Drive Sunday night.

The man was heading southbound in a red Acura when his car swerved across several lanes of traffic and struck a light post near North Avenue about 11:45 p.m., said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

The man — whose identity was being held pending notification of his family — was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:09 a.m. Monday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities did not know early Monday what caused the man to swerve or whether alcohol was involved.
