LOGAN SQUARE — A 23-year-old man has died after he was found shot near his home in the city's Logan Square neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
About 4:35 a.m., police found the man with a gunshot wound in his chest near Sawyer and Wrightwood avenues, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.
The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 5:10 a.m.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as of early Tuesday.
The man was identified as Sheldon McCraven of the 2600 block of North Sawyer Avenue by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Neighbors reported hearing one gunshot and a car speeding away from the scene.
Megan Smith said she was awakened by detectives knocking at her door after the shooting. Smith stood in her doorway Tuesday morning with tears in her eyes and said she had always felt safe on her block until she got word of the shooting.
"This is really upsetting to me," she said. "Someone was shot right outside my front door. This is definitely making me question living here."
Curious passers-by stopped to snap photos and ask what happened when they spotted the yellow and red police tape marking the crime scene. Diana Jones, who lives at Sawyer and Ridgewood avenues, said she did not hear anything.
"I didn't hear any shots," Jones said. "I slept like a baby."
Across the street, four yellow tags marked where shell casings found on the scene. Jones said she cannot remember another shooting in the neighborhood.
"That's why I'm really shocked. It doesn't happen," she said.
Maria Roman, who lives about a block from the shooting site, also said she was shocked when she heard the news. Roman, who has lived in Logan Square for 25 years, said the neighborhood has changed for the better over the years and said she could not recall the last time someone had been killed.
"To happen around here? In Logan Square? No," she said.
Jose Perez, 38, said he had lived in Logan Square for most of his life. He said, overall, the neighborhood is safer than it used to be, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel even led a bike tour a couple of blocks from the shooting site earlier this month.
But Perez said crime is still a problem. Muggings are not uncommon, and he hears gunshots at night, he said.
"Honestly, I believe it's getting worse," Perez said.
Perez said he would like to see a stronger police presence to deal with gangs in the neighborhood. He said his daughter spotted the police tape as he walked her to her school bus, and Perez said it is something he would rather not explain.
"I don't want my daughter to be seeing stuff like this," he said.
