CHICAGO — Authorities found the body of a man in a branch of the Chicago River on the South Side Monday morning.

Someone who found the body floating face down in the river in the 2600 block of South Ashland Avenue called 911 on a cellphone, said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman. The body was found sometime before 9:25 a.m., according to the Fire Department.

Police are treating the case as a death investigation, Mirabelli said.

A spokesman with the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said the morgue had been notified of the death but did not give the man's identity.
