CHICAGO — Twenty-two residents of an Edgewater apartment building were forced to find new shelter after the building's roof collapsed Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Fire officials said the incident in the 5900 block of North Kenmore Avenue began about 4 p.m. when the rear roof of the building began to collapse because of work being done on it.

The city's building department was called in to assess the building's structural integrity.

Initially 60 residents of the 46-unit building were told to find new shelter, but in the end only 22 of them were barred from coming home.

Many of them received shelter provided by the Salvation Army.
