Two Dead, Six Wounded in Shootings Since Friday Night

CHICAGO — Two men are were killed and six others wounded in shootings Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Earlier Friday, six people were injured by gunfire.

A 19-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in the 11700 block of South Morgan Street in West Pullman. He was later identified as Cory Atwater of the same block.

Atwater was shot in his head at 2:20 p.m., police said. Another man was shot in his foot; his condition was unknown.

Just before 8 p.m. Friday, a 36-year-old man was fatally shot during an argument in Austin, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman. Two men were fighting on the sidewalk in the 400 block of South Central Avenue when one pulled a gun and opened fire.

The victim — later identified as Louis Wherry of the 200 block of South Central Avenue — tried to run across the street, but was struck in his abdomen, back, buttocks and elbow, Estrada said.

Wherry was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:33 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

No one was in custody early Saturday.

In non-fatal shootings:

• Two men were wounded in a West Englewood shooting Saturday, police said.

The men were shot about 11:51 a.m. in the 1700 block of West 64th Place, said Officer Daniel O'Brien, a police spokesman.

A 23-year-old man was hit in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. A 22-year-old man was hit in the shoulder and also taken to Stroger but in good condition, O'Brien said.

• A 23-year-old man is in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital after he was shot at a party in East Garfield Park early Saturday. The man had been arguing with someone in an apartment in the 3200 block of West Maypole Avenue, Estrada said.

Someone pulled a gun and shot the victim in his abdomen just before 2 a.m.

• In Englewood, a 35-year-old man was shot in his abdomen and right knee about 9:10 p.m. Friday. The man was standing in the sidewalk in the 1800 block of West 58th Street when someone across the street opened fire.

The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

• Earlier Friday, six people — including three teenagers — were wounded during shootings across the city.
