LAKEVIEW — Chicago Cyclocross — a hybrid sport of biking and steeple chase — is in the thick of its season, with competitions in and around Chicago for the next three months.

The Chicago Cross Cup season culminates Dec. 8 at the course at Montrose Harbor, which doubles as the Illinois State Cyclocross Championship. Other upcoming local races include an Oct. 13 event at Dan Ryan Woods as well as other races in the suburbs and Downstate.

Although each course is different, every race involves traversing up and downhill, jumping barriers and navigating tight turns.

"It's so much fun," said Sandra Samman, who has competed in cyclocross for five years. "You're riding through sand and you're riding through mud, you're riding up hills and down hills and gravel. And each course is so different from the one before."
