AUBURN GRESHAM — A 22-year-old man is in the hospital after he was shot by police after a foot chase on the South Side Monday night, authorities said.

About 9:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a call of a "man with a gun" in the 1300 block of West 76th Street, according to a police statement.

When officers arrived, they saw a several people standing near the corner, and one man in the group began to run away, said Pat Camden, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman.

Two officers began chasing the man, and they saw him holding his hip as he was running, Camden said. They chased the man into a nearby courtyard where he turned and pointed a handgun at them, Camden said. At that point, police had no choice but to shoot the man, Camden said.

The man was shot in his elbow and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital. His wound was not life threatening, Camden said. Police found a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun on the scene.

In an unrelated shooting earlier Monday, two men were shot in South Shore, police said.

About 7:40 p.m., the two men, ages 21 and 28, were standing in the 7000 block of South Paxton Avenue when a dark SUV stopped near the corner of 71st Street and Paxton, said Officer Ron Gaines, a police spokesman.

Two gunmen got out of the SUV and opened fire, Gaines said. The 21-year-old man was shot in his thigh and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the 28-year-old man was shot in his leg and taken to South Shore Hospital.

The two injured men do have gang ties, Gaines said. No one was in custody as of early Tuesday morning.
