CHICAGO — The mother of a 2-month-old Austin baby who died Sunday is being investigated by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, a department spokesman said.

The baby, identified as Alonzo Lane, was found unresponsive inside his home in the 800 block of North Parkside Avenue about 8:50 a.m. Sunday, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Alonzo was taken to West Suburban Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:04 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy had not been completed as of Monday afternoon.

The mother of the infant told authorities that she was sleeping in a king-size bed with Alonzo and two other children and woke up the next morning to find that her baby was not breathing, Estrada said.

DCFS is investigating Alonzo's mother for an allegation of neglect as well as allegations of neglect involving the baby's two siblings, spokesman Dave Clarkin said. The siblings have been placed in the care of a relative, Clarkin said.

DCFS did not receive any reports of abuse or neglect regarding the family before this investigation, Clarkin said.

Police are currently treating the case as a death investigation, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman. No one is in custody.
