UPTOWN — Ald. James Cappleman (46th) called out Chicago Public Schools Wednesday when he complained via Twitter that the school system wasn't taking care of its closed properties.
"CPS needs to do a much better job of keeping up with their [sic] closed properties, starting with Stewart," Cappleman tweeted.
Earlier this year, CPS shuttered 50 schools in the largest school closure in American history. Among them was Graeme Stewart Elementary School, 4525 N. Kenmore Ave.
On Wednesday, Cappleman tweeted a photo of an overflowing trash bin outside the school. Beer cans and cigarette packs are clearly visible.
Keiana Barrett, a spokeswoman for CPS, said the school system "has made every effort to ensure closed schools are clear of debris and waste. In the event that these facilities do collect trash or debris, CPS will quickly dispatch crews to clean those grounds."
Cappleman's office could not immediately be reached for comment.
