CHICAGO — Eight children were injured when a police car struck a school bus on Lake Shore Drive Saturday afternoon, police said.

The school bus was traveling south on Lake Shore Drive near Balbo Drive at 1:23 p.m. when its driver struck a vehicle in front of it, which in turn hit another vehicle, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

A University of Illinois at Chicago police vehicle driving behind the bus collided with it, “due to the abrupt halt,” Zala said.

Eight children were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital with minor injuries, he said.
