CHICAGO — A fight about a girl spiraled into a fatal shooting earlier this month when a Washington Park man allegedly gunned down 25-year-old John Wallace.

Victor Willis, 22, of the 5700 block of South Michigan Avenue, is charged in the murder.

Prosecutors Friday said a man Willis knew was hanging out with a group of friends in the 6400 block of South Morgan Street on Sept. 1. The man began taunting another man about a fight they had previously had about "a girl they both knew," Assistant State's Attorney Bridget O'Brien said.

Identified only as an uncharged co-offender, that man allegedly got mad, left in a van with his girlfriend and returned at about 11:30 p.m. with Willis.

A witness saw the two get out of the van and approach the house, O'Brien said.

When a different man - Wallace - answered the door and refused to say where the individual involved in the argument was, Willis allegedly followed him inside and shot him.

Wallace was shot in the back and pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. the following morning at Stroger Hospital, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Willis was ordered held without bond by Cook County Judge Israel Desierto on Friday.
