LAKEVIEW — CTA officials have released a photo of the woman who they think maced another woman in a robbery attempt on Belmont last week.

A woman in her 20s tried to take the cellphone of a 45-year-old woman on the 900 block of West Belmont Avenue, near Ann Sather restaurant, around 9:45 a.m. last Wednesday. The suspect sprayed a liquid into the victim's face and was unable to take the phone.

Witnesses told police that the woman then ran into the Belmont "L" station. CTA video showed that the woman in this photo walked east out of the station and then ran back in.

The timing of the attempted robbery shocked area employees. Most robberies in the neighborhood happen late at night, and the morning robbery in "broad daylight" had some locals focusing more on their personal safety, they said last week.

Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) posted the bulletin to his website on Monday.

Anybody with information is asked to call the public transportation 24-hour hotline at 312-745-4443 or Jim Higgins, CTA security manager, at 773-820-1019.
