CHICAGO — An off-duty police officer shot a burglar who surprised her in her home in Ashburn Friday morning, officials said.

The officer was awakened about 9:40 a.m. by noises coming from the first floor of her home in the 7900 block of South Sacramento Avenue, said Officer John Mirabelli, police spokesman.

Downstairs, the officer found a man taking items from her home. She announced her position as a police officer and told the man to raise his hands, Mirabelli said.

Instead of raising his hands, the burglar charged the officer, Mirabelli said. In fear for her safety, the officer shot him, Mirabelli said.

The alleged burglar was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but the extent of his injuries was unknown Friday afternoon, Mirabelli said.

The officer was uninjured.
