AUSTIN — For children living in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago, dealing with the issue of handgun violence isn't easy.
But that's exactly what the eight-week Student Voices institute — run by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence at the Peace Corner Youth Center — tackled.
"There are over 300 million guns in circulation, one for every man, woman and child," said Diquan Jones, a 16-year-old participant. "You don't really need all those guns. That's one possible reason I think we have so many gun crimes."
At the end of the program, each student had to produce a work of art — a drawing, an essay or poem — that illustrated something they learned during the program.
