DOWNTOWN — NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. stopped traffic on State Street in front of the Chicago Theatre Monday morning to perform a burn-out stunt.

The stunt — which took less than five minutes — was meant to promote the Geico 400 race next month at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.

Earnhardt spun his car several times after traffic was blocked off on the normally bustling Downtown street. Exhaust filled the air while throngs of onlookers tried to get a glimpse of the star.

Earnhardt Jr. — who's the son of the late NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt — also was scheduled to attend  a fan event at Wrigley Square in the northwest corner of Millennium Park Monday afternoon.
