16-Year-Old Charged In Murder of West Side Teen

By Quinn Ford | July 17, 2013 5:41pm

CHICAGO — A teenage boy is being charged in the shooting death of another teen in the West Garfield Park neighborhood earlier this month.

In a statement Wednesday, police said a 16-year-old boy is charged with first degree murder in connection with the death of 15-year-old Ed Cooper.

Cooper was gunned down about 5 p.m. July 8 in the 600 block of North Lawndale Avenue near Ryerson Elementary.

Cooper's mother said he was playing with his brother and cousin at the time of the shooting. Police said Cooper had no gang ties, and Cooper's mother said the boy had dreams of becoming a police officer.

Police said the 16-year-old was arrested Tuesday but did not release the boy's name.
