COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Austin man was charged with first-degree murder after he stabbed a man to death Friday, authorities said.

Police said Robert Moore, 23, of the 700 block of North Central Avenue, was being charged with the murder of 24-year-old Tommie Bates.

Bates was stabbed to death early Friday morning while attempting to break up a fight between Moore and Moore's brother, police said. About 4:10 a.m., officers responded to a call of two men being stabbed in the courtyard of an apartment building in the 700 block of North Central Avenue.

Bates, of the 5900 block of West Iowa Street, was stabbed in his chest and was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Another man was also stabbed and was taken to West Suburban Hospital, police said.

Moore was scheduled to appear in bond court Saturday.
