UPTOWN — A rabid bat was found Wednesday in Uptown, and the local alderman is warning residents to keep their pets leashed and to get them vaccinated.

The bat was spotted by residents at 940 W. Belle Plaine Ave., in the southern end of Uptown known as Buena Park, which borders Lakeview.

The Department of Animal Care and Control came and took the critter away, according to the office of Ald. James Cappleman (46th), whose ward includes most of Uptown and a portion of Lakeview.

Cappleman announced the discovery on Twitter and said in a tweet that the bat "was determined to have rabies."

"Please keep your animals on leashes and vaccinated," Cappleman added.

Cappleman's chief of staff Tressa Feher said "this is the first rabid bat we have been alerted to since the alderman has been in office."

The city warned residents last month to vaccinate their pets after a rabid bat was found in Edgewater.

Bats should not be handled and should be reported to 311.
