GOLD COAST — Cornell Wrightington claims he was doing "what anyone else would" when he noticed a man acting suspiciously, followed up, and eventually intervened in an attempted sexual assault on the Gold Coast.
But Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) had much kinder words for the Gold Coast doorman at a CAPS meeting Tuesday evening.
"You really epitomize what's good about the City of Chicago," Fioretti said, after Wrightington was presented with a certificate from officer Chris Schenk, who works with the Near North Police District's Community Assisted Policing Strategy.
Wrightington recounted the general details of the June 23 incident, where he saw a man tail a woman on her cellphone and followed him into an alley where he intervened in an attempted sexual assault.
"I asked him to get off of her," he said calmly at the community meeting. "Well, I didn't ask him in that tone."
Area residents were clamoring to recognize Wrightington's efforts, calling them "nothing short of heroic."
