LAKEVIEW — The annual Pride Parade will make its way through Uptown and Lakeview Sunday — and here's what you need to know regarding street closures, parking bans, CTA re-routes and parade rules.
The 44th annual parade, led by former NFL player Wade Davis, starts at noon at Montrose and Broadway and is expected to last 2-1/2 hours. The route ends at Diversey and Sheridan. Last year, the city estimated about 850,000 people showed up for the event.
New for this year: A "zero tolerance" policy that's been touted by Town Hall Police Cmdr. Elias Voulgaris, who will be overseeing the parade for the first time. Voulgaris has repeatedly said officers will be giving out tickets for all quality-of-life issues like drinking or urinating in the public way.
Fines for drinking along a parade route could potentially reach $1,000.
Street Closures
Streets close at 11 a.m. and will be re-opened on a rolling basis as the crowd clears out, according to Ald. Tom Tunney (44th)'s office. The parade runs south from Broadway at Montrose down to Halsted. It then turns east onto Belmont, south onto Broadway and then finally east onto Diversey.
Parking
Parking will be banned from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. — and towing will start immediately, according Tunney's office, including on:
Montrose Avenue, from Greenview Avenue to Hazel Street.
Broadway Street, from Leland Avenue to Grace Street.
Sheridan Road, from Windsor Avenue to Buena Avenue.
Sunnyside Avenue, from Sheridan Road to Grace Street.
Halsted Street, from Grace Street to to Belmont Avenue.
Belmont Avenue, from Sheffield Avenue to Broadway Street.
Broadway Street, from Belmont Avenue to Diversey Parkway.
Diversey Parkway, from Broadway Street to Cannon Drive (Sheridan).
Cannon Drive, from Diversey Parkway to Fullerton Parkway.
Addison Street, from 736 W. Addison to Sheffield Avenue.
Waveland Avenue, from Halsted Street to Broadway Street.
Grace Street, from Halsted Street to Fremont Street.
CTA Bus and Train Tips
Brown Line, Red Line and Orange Line trains will be running more frequently due to the expected volume. Downtown, the Wells and Van Buren stops will be closed and routed to Lake and Wabash instead.
From 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., several buses will be re-routed or not running in certain areas due to the parade:
No. 8 Halsted will not be running north of Fullerton.
No. 76 Diversey will not be running east of Sheffield.
No. 77 Belmont will not be running east of Sheffield.
No. 78 Montrose will be rerouted to Wilson, Marine and Lawrence.
No. 80 Irving Park will not be running east of Clark.
No. 152 Addison will not be running east of Clark.
The city is also recommending that revelers try to leave and enter the train from stations other then Belmont. Other stations near the route include Wilson Red Line, Sheridan Red Line, Wellington Brown Line and Diversey Brown Line.
