CHICAGO — Scorching heat and intense thunderstorms are expected this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service cautioned counties of Northeastern Illinois and Northwest Indiana that Monday afternoon and evening thunderstorms could bring strong winds, flash flooding and "frequent cloud to ground lightning contact."

There's a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms for Monday and a high of 85 degrees, according to the weather service.

On Tuesday, highs could reach 90 degrees with a heat index of 95 degrees, according to the weather service. Currently, the weather service predicts a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms for Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the city could experience a high of 90 degrees and more thunderstorms.

The heat and storms are expected to continue through Thursday and Friday, with temperatures cooling to the 70s by Friday evening.
