CHICAGO — After a freight train derailed on the South Side Thursday morning, Metra warned commuters on its SouthWest Service line that they would face major delays.
A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed near 41st Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway in the Fuller Park neighborhood just before noon Thursday, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said. No one was injured, he said.
The inbound train was headed to the 47th street yard when two of the locomotives and one rail car derailed, but did not tip over, railroad spokeswoman Susan Terpay said. Crews were on scene Thursday afternoon to lift the wheels back onto the tracks, she said.
Metra notified commuters online that some trains on the line would be halted, and others would be rerouted around the derailment.
Metra canceled train Nos. 827 and 831, scheduled to leave Chicago at 5:18 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., respectively. Inbound train No. 34, scheduled to leave the 179th Street station at 4:01 p.m., was also canceled.
Train No. 823, scheduled to leave Chicago at 4:30, left 30 minutes late and was expected to be 50 to 80 minutes late once it arrived at the derailment. Train No. 819, scheduled to leave Chicago at 3:46 p.m., was running 130 to 140 minutes late.
Metra advised riders to consider using alternate transportation, such as the Rock Island Line or the Heritage Corridor Line.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation, Terpay said.
