CHICAGO — A Far South Side man apparently drowned in the Calumet River Tuesday, authorities said.

Officers were notified about 2:45 p.m. of a person in the water at 13700 block of South Hoxie Avenue in Hegewisch, police said.

A police boat searched for the other man for hours, and his body was located at 134th Street, fire officials said about 8 p.m.

Neil Karas, 39, of the 13000 block of South Burley Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The Chicago Fire Department initially said two men were in the river and that one had been rescued in the afternoon.

They later said via Twitter that only one had been in the river.

In addition to the fire and police department boats and divers, a U.S. Coast Guard boat was on scene and helicopters circled the area.
