CHICAGO — A 19-year-old suburban man fractured both of his legs and suffered injuries to his head after being hit by a car as he tried crossing Lake Shore Drive early Sunday morning, police said.

The collision with a 2003 BMW occurred just north of Division Street about 12:35 a.m., said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman.

The man, who is from west suburban Addison, was with four other friends who were trying to reach the lakefront. The man successfully crossed the four southbound lanes to the median, before stumbling into northbound traffic, Mirabelli said.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene as police investigated the crash, Mirabelli said.

The 19-year-old was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he is in critical condition.

An underpass connects Division with the Lakefront Trail on the east side of Lake Shore Drive.
