LAKEVIEW — Want to help choose Inter-American Magnet School's new principal?

The local school council at Inter-American plans to present finalists for the job to the community at 6 p.m. June 12 in the school's auditorium, 851 W. Waveland Ave., according to council community representative Jill Wohl.

The council hopes to get feedback on three finalists, who will be present for the forum. Previously, the council decided to extend the deadline to the end of April due to a lack of applicants, and the Ravenswood-Ridge Network gave the school $1,000 to advertise for the position nationally.

Sixteen people applied for the position. The school is unique because it provides a dual-language program to students, with classes taught in both Spanish and English.

Wohl said the council plans on hearing community feedback on the finalists and then holding a special meeting at 6 p.m. June 13 in the school library to hear more input. They will then vote on a principal.

Current Principal Vernita Vallez announced last fall that she would not renew her contract after four years at the school. She cited an inability to fully do her job due to mixed signals from Chicago Public Schools officials, she wrote in a resignation letter.
