CHICAGO — On the same day President Barack Obama returned to Chicago to raise cash for Democrats and lament gun violence in his hometown, a rash of shootings broke out on the South Side, leaving three dead and at least six wounded.

The shootings spanned six hours and several neighborhoods, with the latest coming just before Obama, in the Streeterville home of longtime supporters, spoke to donors about a range of topics, including Chicago's violence.

"There are still kids just a few miles from here who are threatened by gun violence; who aren't in a school that is giving them what they need to compete in this 21st Century; and whose prospects are dim; if we're honest — not because they don't have the innate capacity but because we as a society have decided that's not our priority," the president said.

The president also stopped at the Hilton Chicago on South Michigan Avenue for a separate fund-raiser, and ended the night at his Kenwood home.

But elsewhere on the South Side, shootings piled up throughout the day.

At about 7 p.m., police rushed to the 7000 block of South Normal Avenue after two people were shot and wounded.

A man in his 20s was hit in the stomach, and another was shot in the buttocks and ankle, said Officer Amina Greer, police spokeswoman.

Just minutes earlier and about a mile away, a man was shot dead in the 7500 block of South Carpenter Street in Auburn Gresham, police said.

The victim, hit several times, was dead on the scene, police said.

About an hour earlier, someone opened fire near the 47th Street Green Line Station, leaving four people wounded. The victims of the 5:48 p.m. shooting included a 15-year-old boy, officials said.

Also hurt were two teen boys and a female whose age wasn't known. It happened in the 300 block of East 47th Street. All were taken to area hospitals.

About 2 p.m., a 34-year-old man was fatally shot in Roseland by two men in the 0-100 block of West 107th Street, officials said.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Officer Daniel O'Brien, a police spokesman.

Earlier, a man believed to be in his 20s was fatally shot about 1 p.m. in West Pullman in a drive-by shooting, officials said.
