UKRAINIAN VILLAGE —  Sunday will be a bittersweet day for Sweet Cakes Bakery, but it won't be the end.

After six years and two different spaces on North Damen Avenue in Ukrainian Village, the father- and-daughter team of Vern and Emily Smith will be closing their enterprise Sunday and relocating Sweet Cakes Bakery to 1223 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park, across from the "Polish Triangle" and Blue Line Division Street "L" stop.

"It's a beautiful spot in a lovely old building with tin ceilings...  a quintessential Chicago space on the edge of the neighborhood. We're looking forward to having the extra foot traffic," said Emily Smith, 36.

Smith, who specializes in made from scratch cupcakes, muffins and pastries — including allergy-free vegan varieties — said she hopes to relocate Sweet Cakes "sooner rather than later" though at the moment there is no firm reopening date set.

The new space is bigger, with a larger kitchen and additional seating, Emily Smith said.

Meanwhile, it's business as usual at Sweet Cakes, which just announced a variety of ways that fans can get their sweet tooth satisfied until the new digs are ready.

Smith said that Sweet Cakes pastries can be found at Star Lounge, 2521 W. Chicago Ave. in Ukrainian Village and Dark Matter coffee shop at 738 N. Western Ave.

Additionally, Sweet Cakes will be selling treats at the Guerrilla Truck Show in the Fulton Market,   popping up at Paperish Mess at 1955 W. Chicago Ave., and "wheeling a pushcart around our old haunts in the mornings," Smith said.
