EAST GARFIELD PARK — Mary Mcleod Bethune school will close due to underutilization, the Chicago Public Schools Board of Education said Wednesday.

Bethune students will be transferred to John Milton Gregory Elementary, a Level 1 school at 3715 W. Polk St., next fall.

According to a report by Richard Neville, an independent judge who served as a hearing officer for the school before it was closed, the school which should have enrollment between 622 and 936, currently only serves 377 students.

Over 98 percent of students at the West Side school are African American and low income.

In his February report on the school, Neville said that Bethune students would receive sufficient supports during the school’s transition.

These include a Principal Transition Coordinator, who would help keep the school’s grades up through the end of the year and intervention groups led by CPS staff to address student concerns.
