CHICAGO — Organizers of the ninth annual West Fest boast it's no "cookie-cutter fest" with the announcement of this year's music headliners, including punk groups, indie rock bands and local house music DJs.
The two-day event runs from noon to 10 p.m. July 13-14 along Chicago Avenue between Damen Avenue and Wood Street.
What sets this fest apart from "other cookie-cutter Chicago street festivals" is its music, the West Fest's site reads. The headliners include up-and-coming artists locally and nationally, the fest boasts.
Taking the main stage include Chicago rock band Tortoise, the Brooklyn duo Javelin, recently revived garage-punk band The Oblivians and indie-rock band Born Ruffians.
The fest also features a stage for DJs that will include local house spinners such as Colette, Heather and Derrick Carter.
For those less interested in the music, there's also a Kid Fest and a Pup Fest.
The Kid Fest runs from noon to 6 p.m. both days and features student and teacher bands from the Suzuki Orff School of Music and Talcott Elementary School. The schools plan to put on instrument-making workshops, carnival style games and obstacle courses for kids, fest organizers said. Organizers said said proceeds from Kid Fest will benefit the schools.
The Pup Fest lets well-behaved dogs frolic with bathing pools, agility courses and more events to be announced, organizers said.
