ROGERS PARK — A bullet pierced the front window of the Common Cup, a cafe that sits at the corner of Morse and Greenview avenues, after shots were fired from a stolen vehicle in broad daylight Saturday, police said.
According to police, no one was hurt in the daytime drive-by shooting in Rogers Park, yet witnesses said they saw a man limp from the scene about 12:30 p.m. near the intersection.
"I was standing at the counter and had a coffee shop full of people," said Ruth Hoekwater, the owner of the cafe. "I was waiting on a little old lady who was ordering something and all of a sudden shots were fired."
Hoekwater, 56, said she had heard four shots ring out from the street, then she heard a bullet "whiz" by her head.
She later found the slug lodged in a wall at the back of the cafe near the bathrooms after it tore through her front window.
"I yelled to everybody to hit the ground — and I hit the ground too," she said.
The shooting occurred about 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Morse and Greenview avenues, where three people in a stolen Mitsubishi Galant fired shots, said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman. He did not know why the shots were fired, and did not say how many were fired.
He said the suspects drove away in the stolen car, and crashed a short time later into a fence in the 2200 block of West Lunt Avenue. The suspects got out of the car and ran away; they are still at large, Mirabelli said.
Soon after, Hoekwater said, police arrived on the scene and placed evidence markers on Morse Avenue.
She went back to running her shop.
"We just kept waiting on customers," and told them, "Well, we just had a shooting here — and what would you like in your latte," she said.
