ANDERSONVILLE — The folks behind popular Ravenswood breakfast and brunch destination Over Easy Cafe are opening an upscale hot dog joint in Andersonville at the former location of Great Lake Pizza.

The new restaurant, Hoppin' Hots, is a venture from Over Easy chef and owner Jon Cignarale and Gwen Nordine, the general manager at the restaurant who is also co-owner of the new hot dog joint. Nordine said Friday that Hoppin' Hots will offer "upscale, gourmet hot dogs."

"We're just excited about the area. There's great foot traffic," Nordine said about Andersonville.

The target opening date is in July, she said. Edgeville Buzz broke the news Friday.

Great Lake, which GQ Magazine once proclaimed had America's best slice of pizza pie, closed in January and left its location at 1477 W. Balmoral Ave. vacant. But now, the space is slated to go from serving Mortadella pie to dishing out hot dogs with, "sass," as Nordine put it.

The restaurant's approach to hot dogs will be influenced by Over Easy's approach to eggs, which can be elaborate, Nordine explained.

Take, for instance, their classic "Sassy Eggs," served with jalapeños, chorizo and cheddar cheese, to name a few ingredients: At least one item on Hoppin' Hots' menu will be a reimagining of the dish with hot dogs.

Nordine added that the location is "close enough to Over Easy, so there is a lot of good will" toward the Over Easy team that should follow them to Hoppin' Hots this summer.
