CHICAGO — Three people are in critical condition after being shot in Greater Grand Crossing, fire officials said.

The victims were shot shortly before 2:30 p.m. in the 7400 block of South Champlain Avenue. Two were transported with life-threatening injuries to Stroger Hospital. A third was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, fire officials said.

Curtis Stewart, 57, said he heard four shots.

"I was coming through my house when I heard the shots. I looked out the window and saw everyone running, ducking and falling," he said.

Lora Quarles said her boyfriend was one of the victims.

"I never seen nothing like this in my life. I never grew up around this," said Quarles, who recently moved to the area. "We were just talking, not expecting shots to go off."

The block is home to a number of children, who were milling about in the aftermath of the shooting.

"We're worried about the kids. No ones asking about them," said one resident.

In a separate incident, another person was shot in the 3600 block of South Cottage Grove Drive at 3 p.m. Fire officials said that person was transported in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

No more information was available.
