CHICAGO — Three people were sent to area hospitals after their car flipped into a South Chicago backyard after a police chase, authorities said.

The chase began in the 7700 block of South Sangamon Street in Auburn Gresham about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when a police officer flagged the car in traffic, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

When the officer approached the car, the driver sped off, leading police on a chase that ended five miles away when the driver lost control of the car in the 8600 block of South Kingston Street, Alfaro said.

The three people in the vehicle had minor injuries and were taken into custody after they were sent to area hospitals, police said.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, the three were taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A police officer also suffered minor hand injuries and was sent to an area hospital, Alfaro said.
