Pie Hole Pizza Joint Misses April Fools' Debut in Uptown

UPTOWN — Pie Hole Pizza Joint's Uptown location had been scheduled to open Monday, but now "opening day is anyone's guess," owner Douglas Brandt said.

Brandt said the restaurant, 5001 N. Clark St., is "95 percent good to go, but a lot of cosmetic details are taking just a little longer than normal.”

“I'm pretty much doing everything myself,” said Brandt, who owns Pie Hole Pizza Joint in Lakeview.

In February, Brandt said he was aiming for an April Fools’ Day opening. Now his hope is that the eclectic pizza shop opens some time in May.

“The big wait,” Brandt said, could be for the city to inspect the place and then grant the permits and licenses necessary for Brandt to do business there.

“Practically, we could be open next weekend. But the real waiting game will be for all the inspections and permits and licenses,” Brandt said.  “At this point, opening day is anyone's guess.”

In June, a much-anticipated Nepalese restaurant, Ne:Wa, is scheduled to open next to Pie Hole at 5009 N. Clark St. Both restaurants would fill vacant properties in Uptown on a commercial strip shared with Andersonville.

Brandt had faced setbacks to funding the Pie Hole expansion, but in December was aided by $30,000 in loans raised via crowd-funding program LendSquare.
