Wheaton Man Dead After Crashing into 'L' Support Beam in Loop

THE LOOP — A man is dead after he crashed his car into a "L" support beam early Tuesday morning, police said.

Michael Weller, 24, of Wheaton, was alone in his car when it crashed at 3:35 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office and police.

Weller crashed his car into a support beam for the elevated tracks near the Harold Washington Library "L" stop, according to witnesses on the scene. The accident happened near the corner of State  and Van Buren streets.

Weller was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 4:41 a.m, according to the medical examiner's office.

No one else was injured in the accident, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman.

No information was available Tuesday morning about what may have caused the crash. Authorities are still investigating, Estrada said.

Authorities had cleared the crash scene by 7 a.m. Tuesday.
