ROGERS PARK — A Loyola University police officer who accidently shot his gun inside campus security headquarters has been fired, school officials confirmed.
University spokeswoman Maeve Kiley confirmed that the officer was removed from duty after firing his gun into the floor on Jan. 17 in a roll call room at 6427 N. Sheridan Rd. — next door to a tanning salon and a Chase bank branch — while showing it to another officer.
No one was injured.
The incident was first reported by the Loyola Phoenix, a student newspaper.
Robert Fine, director of campus safety, did not return requests for comment, but told the Phoenix the incident was "embarrassing."
The university is also considering arming its officers with stun guns.
Campus police officer Tim Cunningham, who acts as a student liaison for the department, told DNAinfo.com Chicago that several incidents where officers, including himself, had been hurt on the Water Tower and Lake Shore campuses could have been diffused with a stun gun.
