The 16-year-old was walking westbound when she stepped into the path of an oncoming 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe in the 1400 block of South Homan Avenue about 6:50 a.m., said officer John Mirabelli, a Chicago police spokesman. The victim appeared to be a student, Mirabelli said.
The girl was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, according to Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Meg Ahlheim.
The driver is being questioned by police, Mirabelli said.
