Man, Woman Hit by Cab in Loop, Witnesses Say

THE LOOP — A man and woman were hit by a cab while crossing Madison Street in the Loop Wednesday afternoon, witnesses said.

The cab hit the man and woman in a crosswalk about 3 p.m. when turning east at Madison Street from Michigan Avenue, said a witness. The witness did not want to be named because he was on duty as a security officer at a building nearby.

Dozens of bystanders jumped into action, "taking charge and control," to help the fallen man and woman before emergency responders arrived, said Randi Doeker, who came upon the scene just after it happened.

The street "was filled with good Samaritans, people on their knees helping put things under [the victims'] heads, talking to them," she said.

Several people, including a mailman, were directing traffic through the street. One woman stood in front of the cab to block it from fleeing, though there was “no suggestion” the cabdriver was going anywhere, Doeker said.

Doeker said the man hit by the cab was talking on the phone while on the ground, but she did not see the condition of the woman.

The cabdriver appeared to be treated for some injuries in his taxi, but was then loaded into an ambulance.

One person was taken to Rush Hospital on basic life support with nonfatal injuries, a Chicago Fire Department official said.

No further details were immediately available.
