COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A teenager is accused of firing first in the shootout that ended with his friend being shot in the face in Altgeld Gardens on Friday, prosecutors and police said.

Daquan S. Harris, 19, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm for the incident.

Harris got into a verbal argument with someone on Friday afternoon that preceded the shooting, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Lisa Morrison said during Sunday bond court.

Harris eventually took out a gun and fired at the man, but the gun jammed, Morrison said.

The man fired back and hit Harris' friend, Morrison said. The 20-year-old victim was shot in the face in the 700 block of East 133rd Street about 1:05 p.m., police said Friday. Harris lives in the block where the shooting happened, according to police reports.

Harris was arrested Saturday and admitted to officers he fired a gun, according to police reports.

The injured man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after the shooting, police said Friday.

Harris was ordered held on $200,000 bail by Cook County Judge Israel Desierto.

As of Sunday, the other man involved in the shooting had not been charged, prosecutors said.
