Man's Body Dumped By Liquor Store, Residents Say

By Darryl Holliday | February 24, 2013 11:18am

AUSTIN — Residents say a man shot Sunday morning was dumped next to a neighborhood liquor store after he'd been killed.

The 31-year-old man was listed dead on arrival on the 100 block of South Cicero Avenue from a gunshot wound to the head at about 7:30 a.m., said Officer Laura Kubiak, a police spokeswoman.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Ricardo Rivera of the 4900 block of West 23rd Place in Cicero.

Police would not confirm resident reports as of late Sunday morning, but neighbors on the scene said they were told by officers that the man's body appeared to have been dumped from elsewhere.

"They said his pockets and his [penis] was out," said Edwin Santana, a lifelong West Side resident. "It's strange but it happens — especially here on Cicero."

The body could still be seen lying beside Rothschild Liquors, a popular convenience store, at 10 a.m. when it took three officers to lift him into a police vehicle for transport.

According to Santana, several cameras along the liquor store's roof could have taped the murder.

"A war has been going on with police and gangbangers," he said of recent violence in the neighborhood.

The shooting occured several blocks from where Shemara Fitpatrick, a mother of four, was gunned down in January.
