BRIDGEPORT — The owners of a new grocery store say local shoppers won't have to wait long for its debut.

The Save-a-Lot store at 3418 S. Halsted St. is expected to open Feb. 20, said Kishora Kumar, 38, one of the store's four owners.

Kumar, of Mayfair, said the location will be run by the same crew from the independent, shuttered Halsted Foods. The switch to Save-a-Lot was about being able to offer more competitive prices, he said.

Employees are working to renovate and spruce up the interior and transform it into an "easy to shop" neighborhood store that will offer produce, meats, dairy, and baby and household products.

The merchandise will be a mix of brand names and the company's own products.

"Everything will be nice," Kumar said.

Billed as a "hard-discount, limited-assortment grocery retailer," the Missouri-based company has in recent years placed a bigger footprint on the city's South Side — part of a larger company expansion that aims for 2,300 outlets across the country.
