CHICAGO — A masked gunman shot a man getting into a car on the Gold Coast early Tuesday morning, hitting him in the knee, police said.

The shooting happened about 5 a.m. near Chicago Avenue and Rush Street.

The 20-year-old victim told cops he was getting into his car when the masked man approached and shot him, police said.

The victim drove himself from the Gold Coast to the University of Chicago Medical Center on the South Side, where he was listed in good condition.

Later in the morning, many people who work near where the shooting took place said they were shocked to hear of the gunfire.

"It's scary," said Catherine Lam, who works at Fantasy Nails on Chicago Avenue.

Lam and others said it was the first shooting they could remember happening in the area. They said they have heard of people getting their phones stolen, but nothing as violent as a shooting.

"It happened right on the corner,"  she said. "How did I miss that?"
