Fire Delays Opening of Dollop Coffee & Tea in Streeterville

UPTOWN — A popular Uptown coffee shop would have opened a second location in Streeterville Tuesday — if it wasn't for a small fire that broke out there earlier this week, its owner said.

Dollop Coffee & Tea — which has served Metropolis coffee and Hoosier Mamma Pies out of its original location at at 4181 N. Clarendon Ave. since 2005 — was planning to open a second location at 345 E. Ohio St. in Streeterville Tuesday.

But a blaze sparked by chemicals on Sunday night left much of the new space damaged, owner Dan Weiss said.

Several rags that had been soaked in "very powerful wood finish" and left in the trash near the front of the store "spontaneously combusted," the Edgewater resident explained.

Automatic sprinklers took care of the fire, he noted, but the store sustained both water and smoke damage.

"We are hoping for a two-week maximum setback," said Weiss, who added a February opening now appears likely.

He did not immediately know how much the damages would cost, but said the store's insurance would be able to cover everything. He added that he is still in love with the location, despite the setback.

"I'm always looking for new place to open coffee shops up," said Weiss, who also owns a coffee shop in Lakeview. "I really love doing it, and I had been looking for the perfect place for Dollop — part two."
