CHICAGO — Police shot a man early Saturday after he allegedly pulled a gun on cops and tried to flee the scene during a traffic stop.

South Chicago district officers stopped a Jaguar at about 1 a.m. Saturday on the 9400 block of South Chicago Avenue, according to a police statement.

The driver refused to comply with a pat down and reentered the vehicle in an attempt to flee, according to the statement.

One officer entered the vehicle on the passenger side to stop him, according to police.

The victim pulled a gun from his waistband and the officer shot him in the stomach, according to the statement.

Three children were in the vehicle at the time, police said.

The children were all 9 and younger, according to Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden.

The vehicle came to a stop near the intersection of South Chicago and Harbor avenues after the shooting, about 100 yards south of the initial traffic stop, Camden said.

The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, according to Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford.

A juvenile girl was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital in stable condition in connection to injuries sustained when the vehicle struck a building, Langford said.
