Last Night at Cal's

By Darryl Holliday | January 1, 2013 12:22am

SOUTH LOOP — After 65 years of beers, Cal's is no more.

The South Loop dive bar made its last call Monday night with a packed house for New Year's Eve after announcing plans to shut down on New Year's Day.

"Sorry to say after 65 years your favorite s---ty dive bar is closing it's [sic] doors at the end of the month," a post on its Facebook page read. "For reasons I can explain, and for some I will never know, our last night will be a New Years Eve show."

After 25 years working the bar, general manager Mike Fierstein said he'll miss the place — even the people he's had to kick out over the years.

"I'm looking for a job as of tomorrow," he joked to a friend outside of the venue at 400 S. Wells St.

"It's a shame — a lot of people feel a sense of community is gone, but that's the way it goes."

Patrons of Cal's are encouraged to check back for updates as Fierstein noted his plan to open a new bar some time in the future.
