Cops: 'Suspicious Package' at Chase Bank Was Book Bag

By Victoria Johnson | December 21, 2012 4:22pm

LOGAN SQUARE — Police and fire officials taped off a Logan Square shopping area and parking lot for more than an hour Friday morning after someone reported a suspicious package left near a Chase Bank ATM.

Emergency crews responded to the Chase Bank at 2235 N. Milwaukee Ave. about 9 a.m. after receiving reports of a suspicious package in the vestibule of the bank next to an ATM, Police News Affairs Officer Joshua Perkiss said.

A Chicago Fire Department HazMat team investigated, and discovered that it was nothing more than a book bag full of books, Perkiss said.

Several businesses share the lot that was taped off, including a Kentucky Fried Chicken, the Bubbleland laundromat and a Baskin-Robbins.

Shakespeare District Lt. Michael Mulkerin said bank employees suspect someone came in to get some cash, then quickly ran out to catch a train at the nearby Blue Line station, leaving the bag behind.
