SOUTH CHICAGO — An afternoon blaze Wednesday left a three-story home uninhabitable, according to the homeowner.
None of the residents were at the home on the 8400 block of South Burley Street at the time of the fire, said Joseph Estrada, 47, the home's owner. He lived there with his nine children since buying the building, which previously housed a dry cleaner, in 1987.
Fire Department officials responded to the blaze shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department's Twitter feed.
Estrada said the blaze began in the back of the house before consuming the rest of the building. He was notified by his brother who lives on the same block.
No one was injured, though three of the family's kittens died in the fire.
