AUSTIN — An 85-year-old grandmother was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning.

The victim, Bessie Manning, was suffering from dementia and died more than a mile from her apartment at Senior Suites Chicago, 335 N. Menard Ave. in the 3:10 a.m. crash.

Albert Manning, 25, described his grandmother as “joyous."

“It’s so tragic. Nobody deserves to go like that,” said Manning, an Austin resident.

Bessie Manning remained spry, relatives said, despite her ailment.

“She could walk really good. That’s how she ended up so far from home,” said her grandson.

Police said Bessie Manning was hit by a car headed west in the 5600 block of Division Street.

The victim's grandson said he was confident there were witnesses to the fatal crash and hoped whoever was behind the wheel came forward.

“Turn yourself in. If you don’t, it’s going to be a tough life you’re going to live,” he said.

Police have not provided a description of the car.
